A film by Marius Jopen, Richard Keith & Audrey Belaud starring Marcello
SPACEBIRTH 2 is an experimental silent Sci-fi, fantasy Film produced and shot in Berlin, Germany.
In 2018, Marius Jopen, Richard Keith & Audrey Belaud turned their creative brainchild from a phone call into a 3 year, feature-length movie project. Without any previous experience in the film industry, the project evolved into a team of over 250 volunteers and 50 professional workers.
On December 21st 2019 After 2 years of production, the first public screening was held in the prestigious Babylon Kino in Berlin. On this magical evening, 350 guests filled the cinema seats experiencing SPACEBIRTH 2 for the first time.
A cosmonaut travels through the galaxy mapping the stars and searching for beauty. Long on his quest he has become tired and despondent. When his final hopes for something more are lost, it is at this time that his greatest journey begins. Sucked into a surreal adventure beyond understanding, the cosmonaut comes to discover what he was really searching for all along.
A connection is made so strong that when threatened, it forces him to let go of everything he once knew and step into a new life. A Tale of Adventure, Sci-Fi oddity, love and Donuts, SPACEBIRTH 2 is the fantasy of the year.
How did we manage to finance it ourselves?
As an independent studio, we learnt to finance everything ourselves in new & inventive ways. For example, we found out that carrot cakes can buy what money can't. This new currency granted us access to many great opportunities including the historic 'Heizkraftwerk Klingenberg Power Station to shoot 'TURBO!', a TV show that exists within the Film.
The volunteers from The love foundation network have been a pillar.
We could never have achieved the speed of production without the incredible efforts of these generous people. Bringing more and more helping hands each time they came back.
With our main resource being virtually free, we were able to focus our finances more intelligently.
The free cardboard from bike shops helped a lot. Still, all our economies came together in order to pay the rent and sustain the entire crew. As well as a lot of tape, wood, glue, craft knives, glue guns, staplers & paint for all those workers!
We poured our entire collective wealth into the creation of this film, over 20k for the production phase.
How did we make it without any previous experience in the film industry?
Marius, being a successful graphic designer was looking forward to putting beauty into motion. Making a movie naturally came as the next step in his journey...
Thanks to his network we were able to create within four different studios that answered the needs of the different phases of production. Known for his powerful mindset, he made sure that everything was rolling smoothly and in time.
Skilled in many ways, he was producing the movie from the very first day without even knowing it yet.
Richard, had a strong vision of the cosmonauts world. With his drawing and sculpting background he only needed cardboard to succeed...
He knew that bike shops have lot's of free cardboard. This is how he spent day after day, living and working within the spaceship with his favourite craft-knife. 3 months later his drawings had become a real-life 20-metre-long spaceship, the set was now complete.
Audrey, show up as a prop builder. Facing the ambition of the project, the time-frame and all the volunteers coming, she naturally started to organize the production tasks and get the magic rolling.
After 3 days, being so successful at her new role, Richard and Marius gave her a whip and named her project manager. She was the glue that kept the project together in dark times. She is now co-producer of the movie and running THE PEOPLE° with Marius.
Marcello, our main actor, initiated THE PEOPLE° with Marius after working together at the Sagmeister & Walsh studio in New-York. One of his dream's was to become an actor. The Film came as the perfect opportunity to try. He soon became our main character and brought his heart into the film. Acting for the first time, mostly naked; What an unexpected and strange journey.
Mary Fischer the naked alien as she would call herself, came like an angel into the project. She trained hard with Marcello to create the emotional connection and develop her own original character. As we were still building the set during the day, her scenes were at night. She was organising events at her own workshop in Berlin during the day, and still she found the time to prepare amazing food for the entire crew. Truly An angel.
Jamie, the cameraman, was introduced to us through Ellie, one of our main soldier's. He was studying cinematography in London when we sent him a video to present the script and the ongoing set design. His reaction was the best you could wish for. He jumped in his car with his Red Dragon, camera and lights and he was off to Berlin to shoot the film. He actually came twice and each time he did an incredible job.
Felix is the main editor of the film. He came to visit us right after the shooting ended and offered his help. He watched over 60 hours of footage, found the beauty in the mess and brought a film out of it. Later, he made a second version of it, and a third... version 5 is now on its way, we were so lucky for Felix's love, madness and devotion to the project.

Our primary goal is to screen SPACEBIRTH 2 at niche fantasy and experimental festivals such as Berlinale or blahblah.
With help from investors we will be able to bring SPACEBIRTH 2 to a higher standard of quality and promote the film on a worldwide market.
SpaceBirth 2 will be better.
Space Birth 2 is a silent film. There is no dialogue between the characters. The sound design isn't yet creating the atmosphere that reflects the story. Given that the film is a Silent Sci-fi, Sound lies at the core of its success. Many of the audience members at the initial screening referred to how the film without any dialogue created a very immersive almost hypnotic like viewing experience. We wish to take this feedback and build upon it. With 5.1 surround sound and professional foley, such as footsteps and breathing sound, the audience will be locked into the screen.
It should be known that we chose the deadline of the first screening as our main priority. Because of this we had to make a lot of tough decisions surrounding what we could insert on time. We initiated and worked on more visuals than what can be seen in that version. Beautiful space landscapes, A journey through the centre of a dead planet, Drone footage from Death Valley in the Mojave Desert, an interactive Space shop and more. With funding, we can integrate this work along with professional colour grading.
Since the adventure of Space Birth 2 is so unique, it deserves to be known. Funds will be used to submit the enhanced version of SPACEBIRTH 2 to festivals such as Berlinale, SunDance, & xxx. We are committed to immersing the entire world as much as possible into the Cinematic experience we have created.
Being screened in festivals will present SPACEBIRTH 2 to the outside world. It's also a new door opening to reach our personal dreams. Producing films and props.
Promotion & Distribution
A big part of the budget will be allocated to the promotion and distribution of the film.
Part of our decision to create a dialogue free film is that we can distribute it effectively in any country in the world. From Japan to Brazil we intend this film to be seen & talked about.
We will distribute it worldwide on "VOD" (video on demand) marketed through companies such as Amazon Prime, Dacast & Netflix.
Without financial support, this would be an incredibly tough nut to crack.
Beyond our goals
If we exceed in our efforts thanks to the generosity and goodwill of funders we will be able to pay producers, directors and artists an amount that is more deserving of their hard work.
As a reward for ourselves, we are planing a 2 months tour in Japan to screen the movie in local cinemas.
The filming represented a time when we were very inspired and felt a great surge of creativity. Here are some of the key influences that fuelled that inspiration and hopefully made their way into the fabric of the film.
The Famous french illustrator Jean 'Moebius' Giraud had a huge effect on the way we saw our world. A running joke during production was that whatever we thought we had dreamt up; "Moebius had done it first". He had an amazing ability to bring together a wide range of elements and colours into a scene and successfully make them both simple & beautiful. The spacecraft within our film is a homage to the Stone bird in Moebius' famous " Arzach ". When choosing colour palette's for the inside of our Ship we took Moebius comics down to the paint shop!
The Russian Film Solaris ( 1972 ) based on the book of the same name is a Sci-fi classic. The journey of a cosmonaut to a lonely planet looking for answers. The feelings of isolation out in space and how this effects one's mind. The human condition in space was necessary for our film and Solaris was an important reference because it focused more on the emotional aspects of space travel more than the technological. Our Main character is called The Cosmonaut as a nod to the Russian portrayal of Sci-fi, rather than western cinema's portrayal with Astronauts. The long Tunnel walk in our film is a tribute to the curious and funny Motorway scene in Solaris.
Director Alejandro Jodorowsky was a major influence. Most notably his visually stunning The holy mountain from 1973. It represented the direction we wished to pursue in surrealism. A heavily abstract film that isn't concerned in explaining itself. It takes the audience on a visual adventure and this came as a breath of fresh air. The pure oddity of the film was captivating and we hope we were able to infuse some of that beauty in our film. The entrance passage that links the cosmonauts world into the surreal is a direct reference to the journey the main character in holy mountain must take across the rainbow striped hallway.
Our main character is the heart of the film and the link between the audience and our world. We were heavily inspired by the emotional range of the characters in Federico Fellini's films. Each Character was so rich in depth and interesting to watch on screen. Most notably Marcello Mastroianni in the splendid film "8 1⁄2". Our main actor's stage name "Marcello" is an obvious reference to the great performer and the idol that he looked up to on set.
The German classic Das Boot about a stranded u-boat was more of a minor influence but had many great qualities that we wished to integrate. It brought feeling's of action and determination in its characters and most importantly the fear of being in a vessel alone in the pure abyss. The film inspired us to make our spaceship more like a 'Space-going Submarine' and to hopefully reflect our character in his own abyss. When the Spacecraft is under extreme pressure the creaking noises are emulated off of the sound of the Submarine in Das boot.
